Rap/HipHop: Adam’s Monthly Playlist – May 2017

By: Adam Pasternak

The month of May started off pretty slow, but it definitely picked up this past week. Gucci Mane released yet another project, Droptopwop with Metro Boomin’, Bryson Tiller released his follow up to Trapsoul with his second album entitled, True to Self, and Lil Yachty finally released his debut album, Teenage Emotions. On top of that, Calvin Harris released a few more singles off his upcoming album, I discovered Playboi Carti, and much more.

Let’s get to it:

Playboi Carti – Playboi Carti:

Cash Carti’s debut album is full of summer bangers, highlighted by Magnolia – my favourite song at the moment. It just bumps, plain and simple. I actually discovered Carti when I was watching the live stream of the Rolling Loud Festival in Miami a couple of weekends ago. His performance was so refreshing; he was just having fun on stage and he brought all his boys with him. It was like one massive party, and it was fun to watch. He even brought A$AP Rocky out to perform their song New Choppa. If you haven’t listened to this album yet, as soon as you’re done reading this article – listen to it. Thank me later. Here are my favourite songs from the album:

Magnolia – Playboi Carti:

New Choppa (feat. A$AP Rocky) – Playboi Carti:

Wokeuplikethis* (feat. Lil Uzi Vert) – Playboi Carti:

Check – Young Thug:

This is an old song, and I won’t lie to you – I just heard it for the first time last week. At least I’m honest. Regardless, it’s a banger and I can’t stop listening to it. Check it out below:

Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 – Calvin Harris:

The album hasn’t dropped yet, but we’ve been blessed with a few singles thus far. Heatstroke and Rollin (along with Slide) are just a small taste of what’s to come from Calvin Harris. If the album is anything like the three singles – the summer will be his. I can already picture myself out in the sun by the water just blasting this album. I can’t wait, but for now, here are Heatstroke and Rollin:

Heatstroke (feat. Young Thug, Pharrell Williams & Ariana Grande) – Calvin Harris:

Rollin (feat. Future & Khalid) – Calvin Harris:

Pull Up Wit Ah Stick (feat. Loso Loaded) – SahBabii:

SahBabii – what a name. These new artists keep surprising me. Just when I thought these guys names couldn’t get more ridiculous, this guy pops up. Regardless, the song is really catchy and will definitely be on my summer playlist. Check out the song below, and if you like it, check out Wiz Khalifa’s “Weedmix” of the song here:

Kites – Anik Khan:

I stumbled upon this song a couple weeks ago in the hip-hop section on Apple Music…but the song really isn’t hip-hop at all. Regardless, I love it (and so does my dad, actually). No idea who Anik Khan is, but as soon as I’m done writing this article I plan on listening to more of his stuff. Kites is just a great song through and through – Khan’s voice is great, there’s a catchy hook and some really great production. Give it a listen, and let me know what you think:

Butterfly Effect – Travis Scott:

Is there a bad Trav song? Let me know.

RAF (feat. A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Quavo, Lil Uzi Vert & Frank Ocean) – A$AP Mob:

Just by seeing who’s featured on this song, I knew RAF would be a banger. Rocky got arguably the hottest MC’s in the game right now…all on one song. It’s a must listen. Check it out below:

4 AM (feat. Travis Scott) – 2 Chainz:

So far, all of the singles 2 Chainz has released for his upcoming album, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music are all dope. 4 AM (feat. Travis Scott) is no different. Take a listen, and get excited for June 16 – when PGLTM drops:

Teenage Emotions – Lil Yachty:

Now, I’m not gonna lie. I didn’t expect to like this album at all. The couple singles Yachty released prior to the album were terrible (and by far the worst songs on the album). But, to my surprise, I really enjoyed Teenage Emotions. It’s almost like child rap, and it’s fun to listen to. Is it anything special? No, not really. But it is good and I do recommend it. My favourite songs on the album are All Around MeBetter, and Forever Young. Check them out below:

All Around Me (feat. YG & Kamaiyah):

Better (feat. Stefflon Don):

Forever Young (feat. Diplo):

Droptopwop – Gucci Mane:

Gucci and Metro Boomin’ released Droptopwop in celebration of the anniversary of Gucci’s release from prison last year. He’s released so much music since his release it’s incredible. He’s arguably bigger than ever and this album will only help hip climb the ladder. Gucci’s at his finest when he’s making 2K references and hilarious one liners – and this album has a whole lot of it. Met Gala featuring Offset definitely is the headliner on this project, but the whole thing really is solid. My other two favourite songs from Droptopwop are Both Eyes Closed featuring 2 Chainz and Young Dolph, and Finesse the Plug Interlude. Check all three songs out below:

Met Gala (feat. Offset) – Gucci Mane:

Both Eyes Closed (feat. 2 Chainz & Young Dolph) – Gucci Mane:

Finesse the Plug Interlude – Gucci Mane:

True to Self – Bryson Tiller:

It’s funny – I was just thinking to myself, “Man, I need some new music to be released. It’s been a pretty quiet month.” Then, BAM! Bryson surprised us all when he released his new album, True to Self, a month early. The album is dope! I mean, it’s classic Bryson – it’s really not any different than TrapSoul, more like a continuation. Some people might not like that – they wanted to see Bryson evolve. Myself, though, I’m completely fine with this. It’s been a while since he’s released any new music and I’ve had a long enough break that I am more than ready for more of the same. His voice is great, the beats are great – what’s not to like? Checkout my favourite songs from the album below:
