NCAA: March Madness is Living up to its Name

Alright, so is anyone else’s bracket completely screwed? Well, I have three – and they all pretty much are. It’s only been three days into the damn thing and all hell has already broke loose. The 11th ranked Xavier Musketeers have come out of nowhere to clinch a spot in the Sweet Sixteen (beating 6th ranked Maryland and 3rd ranked Florida State – who I had in my Final Four – along the way). As well, the defending champs, and many people’s choice to win again this year, the Villanova Wildcats, were ousted by an 8th seeded Wisconsin Badgers squad in a fantastic game last night. With all thats already happened, who knows what upsets could go down today.

Even with my bracket falling apart, this has managed to be one of the most exciting March Madness tournaments yet. Apart from a couple blow outs, every game has been close and exciting. The Michigan vs. Oklahoma State game on Friday was unbelievable, with Michigan squeezing out a 92-91 win. I think the Cincinnati vs. UCLA game this evening could be the best game on today. I even think that the Bearcats will end up winning (sorry, Ball family). Another game to look out for today is the Kentucky vs. Wichita State game, as the Shockers look to “shock” the Wildcats and live to play another week. They had that magical run a few years back with Cleanthony Early, Ron Baker, Fred VanVleet and none other then Nick Wiggins – can they do it again with a new crop of unknown’s? The West Virginia Mountaineers have looked good this weekend as well. They are led by the Tony Soprano of college coaches, Bob Huggins, and the most stereotypical white college player since Frank Kaminsky, Nathan Adrian. They have pressed their way (literally) to the Sweet Sixteen. It’s really amazing to watch how many turnovers they force their opponents to commit. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their success against the first seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs in their Sweet Sixteen matchup next week. Both teams matchup well, and both teams have very experienced head coaches. I can’t wait for this one.

At this point, I don’t even care about my bracket anymore. I think it would be pretty cool to see Wisconsin in the final four beating Duke in the Elite Eight, or for Michigan and Michigan State to somehow meet up in the Elite Eight (never doubt Izzo in March). This tournament has been crazy thus far, and it’s not worth ruining the experience by worrying about my bracket. If you’ve somehow managed to do well, good for you. But if you’re like me, and your bracket is a mess (which is probably most of you), just watch these games and enjoy them. There’s nothing better than watching basketball from 12:00 in the afternoon until 11:00 at night – enjoy it while it lasts.

P.S.

Here’s some Nathan Adrian and Bob Huggins entertainment to hold you over until the first game tips off this afternoon at 12:10:
