Rap/HipHop: On Repeat – Khalid and Lil Uzi Vert

By: Adam Pasternak

This week, I’ve found myself listening to the same bunch of songs over and over again. Those songs comprise of a combination of two newer projects: American Teen by Khalid, and Luv is Rage 1.5 (EP) by Lil Uzi Vert. While the two projects have completely different sounds to them, they both have a happy, energetic vibe and there somehow isn’t one bad song on either one.

Luv is Rage 1.5, is Lil Uzi’s version of J. Cole’s Truly Yours EP that he released before Born SinnerIt’s a little snack, if you will, to hold the fans over until the main course (the album) comes out. The EP consists of four songs, highlighted by “XO TOUR Llif3” (better known as, “All My Friends Are Dead”), which was heard in the background of an Instagram video posted by Uzi where he is seen driving around with The Weeknd. Each song has that classic Uzi energy that just pumps you up and makes you feel like you just drank four Red Bull’s. For a guy who’s physically small, he has a shit ton of energy and it shows in his music. While I did enjoy the first instalment of his Luv is Rage series, I didn’t love it, and so I didn’t expect to like this EP as much as I did. I haven’t stopped listening to it since last weekend, and I don’t plan to any time soon. If the upcoming Luv is Rage 2.0 is anything like this EP, then we’re in for a real treat. 2017 could be the year where Uzi takes that next step and becomes one of the bigger names in the game. This should be a huge summer for the newest Taylor Gang signee. Check out the EP on Datpiff, here.

I guess you could say I’m fashionably late on Khalid, and his album entitled American Teen. I saw the name “Khalid” on Apple Music a while back and thought it had to be some DJ Khaled wannabe or someshit like that. I’ve seen lots of people posting about it, but I never really thought to give it a listen until a few days ago, and man am I glad I did. When I was done listening to it, I had the same sort of feeling as I did when I first listened to Malibu by Anderson Paak. While both artists have different styles, they both have that happy, “summery” feel to them. Malibu was that album last summer that I could just throw on whenever I was going on a long drive and didn’t want to worry about which song would come on next. I could listen to the damn thing over and over again and three hours later I’d be in Haliburton (shout out Matt Duchene). I feel like American Teen could be like that for me again this summer. There’s no bad song on the album and each song flows seemingly into the next. The album clearly has a well thought out structure to it and I can’t get enough of it. My favourite song is “Winter”, with “Young Dumb & Broke” as a close second. I highly recommend giving this album a listen. If you plan on coming in my car with me this summer, you might not have a choice.

To get you started though, here is “Winter”:
