“Mound Meeting” is a SportsNak feature-story, following freshman relief pitcher, Jesse Fishbaum, of the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes. Throughout the year, we will follow Jesse’s story and track his progress as he tries to turn his childhood dream into a reality. In Chapter 3, Jesse writes his first piece for SportsNak, telling us how his first year of College Baseball has gone thus far and what he is expecting in the second half.

2015 was a fantastic experience. Being faced with adversity I can confidently say made me a stronger, and braver man. Starting in January, I was finishing my final year with the Ontario Nationals. It was my second year as a pitcher as I was converted from the outfield. That season I experienced a lot of success. I made mental, and physical adjustments that gave me the ability to compete at a high level. I can’t thank my coaches Shawn Gillespie and Kevin Clouser enough, as they believed in me and taught me the correct mental attitude in order to play the game successfully. They made sure I knew that nothing will be handed to me, and hard work and persistence will drive me towards success. They took me under their wing and showed me that I control my own destiny, and that the possibilities are endless. The most important thing is believing in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, then why should anyone else?

When I was given the opportunity to go to Scottsdale, I was ecstatic. Being in the middle of so many scouts and playing in one of the most competitive JUCO conferences in the nation is very exciting. Coming from Toronto, I wasn’t used to being able to throw outside after October due to the weather. This is the first year I’ve been able to train and throw outside mid-December wearing shorts! I have flourished in the hardworking environment created by my coaches and teammates. We expect to win and our work ethics give us the opportunity to. I am excited to continue to work hard to complete my goals, and succeed as a student-athlete in order to move on to the next level. I can’t wait for the opportunities and challenges 2016 will bring. Watch out for me in a few years!
