Todd Gurley has taken the NFL by storm over the last few weeks after making his debut in week 3. In just 5 games he has 575 yards and 3 touchdowns. There were a lot of nervous GM’s at the draft that passed on him because of his injury history, but Gurley has quieted his doubters with 4 very strong performances in a row. He’s made me look like a fantasy football genius this year as well, as I took him late in the draft as a high-risk, high-reward player. Gurley looks like he will be a force in the NFL for many years to come, barring any serious injuries. Let’s take a look at how he got here.
Gurley was a 4-star recruit, and fifth ranked running back overall, out of high school in North Carolina. After a strong high school career he decided to attend the University of Georgia. He made an impact in his freshman season, totalling over 1000 rush yards! In fact, his freshman season would be his best statistical season. His junior year, he suffered a scary ACL injury, which almost cost him his football career. Many GM’s had doubts about him after suffering such a serious injury. Running backs take a lot of hits over their career and usually don’t last as long in the NFL and so to have such a serious injury even before playing your first NFL game, it really effected his draft stock. The Rams took a big risk picking Gurley high in the first round, but so far they have come out looking like genius’. He’s playing great and the Rams offence, led by Gurley and Nick Foles, has been looking great. Gurley’s speed and agility is up their with the elite and I think as long as he can stay healthy, the Rams may have the next best running back in the NFL. There’s just something about him. Maybe it’s the fact that he’s already faced adversity at such a young age, and overcame it, and he has the maturity of a veteran player. He’s going to be fun to watch over the next bunch of years. Jeff Fisher has done a nice job of building his team through the last few drafts. Tavon Austin is another guy who’s breaking out this year. The Rams are an exciting team to watch already, and they will be for many years to come.
